Winter garden structural calculation and glass roof design
In a winter garden, roof glass, rafters and wall connection act as one system. We calculate the whole system under snow and wind and deliver a clear report for manufacturers and owners.
Why it matters
Snow is usually the governing load: it accumulates on low-pitch glass roofs and drifts against the host wall on lean-to designs. Wind tries to lift the light structure. Overhead glass must be laminated on the inside and correctly sized for both strength and user safety.
We check rafters, beams, posts, roof glass, gutters and wall fixings together, to the Eurocodes and the national annex of the destination country.
Systems
- Glass-roofed winter gardens
- Enclosed terraces with sliding or folding glass
- Lean-to and freestanding conservatories
- Verandas and skylights
Standards
- EN 1991-1-3
- EN 1991-1-4
- EN 1999-1-1
- DIN 18008-2
- EN 1992-4

Snow
Ground snow, shape coefficients and drift at the wall.
Wind
Roof and wall pressure and uplift.
Rafters and beams
Bending, deflection and supports.
Roof glass
Laminated inner pane, thickness, stress and deflection (DIN 18008 approach).
Connections
Wall fixings, post bases and anchors.

Winter Garden Structural Calculation
Which glass should be used in a winter garden roof?
The inner pane of overhead glazing should be laminated. Thickness depends on span, snow load and support conditions and is determined by calculation.
