Glass balustrade structural calculation
A glass balustrade is a safety element people lean on and impact. We determine the line load, laminated glass build-up, base channel and anchorage by calculation.
Why it matters
Design loads depend on occupancy: a private balcony and a crowded shopping-mall gallery are not designed for the same load. Laminated glass that stays in place after breakage is part of the design.
We check glass, aluminium channel and the anchorage into the slab or slab edge together for channel-clamped, point-fixed and post-and-rail systems.
Systems
- Top- or side-mounted channel balustrades
- Point-fixed glass balustrades
- Post-and-rail aluminium railings
- Stairs, galleries, terraces and pools
Standards
- EN 1991-1-1
- DIN 18008-4
- EN 1999-1-1
- EN 1992-4

Line load
Horizontal load at handrail height by EN 1991-1-1 category.
Glass
Laminated glass thickness, interlayer, stress and deflection, post-breakage safety.
Base channel
Bending capacity and clamping system.
Anchors
Edge distances, concrete strength, tension and shear.

Glass Balustrade Calculation
Is single toughened glass enough for a balustrade?
Generally no. Laminated glass should be used so that the barrier keeps preventing falls after breakage.
